DENTAL THERAPY
What are dental fillings?
A dental filling is a type of restorative dentistry treatment used to repair minor tooth fractures, tooth decay, or otherwise damaged tooth surfaces. Dental filling materials, which include composite, porcelain, and silver amalgam, can be used to even out tooth surfaces for better biting or chewing.
How is a dental filling done?
The dentist will begin the dental filling procedure by preparing the tooth and surrounding areas necessary to restore the damaged area. Decay or damage is removed and the area is cleaned to remove bacteria or debris before it is “filled” with the fill materials.

Questions and answers
How long do dental fillings last?
Each fill is unique and the duration of a fill depends on the following main factors:
- Diet
- Oral hygiene
- Oral health
- Materials used
- Size and position of the filling
What does the dentist use for dental fillings?
Composite fillings are a mercury-free plastic material that matches the natural tooth color used to replace missing parts of a tooth. By bonding to the tooth, composite fillings restore most of the original strength and natural appearance of the tooth. In addition to offering durability and strength, many patients opt for composite fillings, as they are also more aesthetically pleasing.
Porcelain fillings are tooth-colored ceramic fillings. They are more resistant to stains and abrasion and can last longer. Porcelain fillings are custom made to fit your cavity perfectly and to fit the rest of your teeth.
What happens if a dental filling is not obtained?
Tooth decay can only get worse over time. If you don’t seek treatment, tooth decay can turn into a toothache and may eventually require further treatment or cause that tooth to be lost.
When tooth decay reaches the nerve of the tooth, you may begin to experience extreme sensitivity and pain in the teeth. Eventually a tooth abscess may form and the tooth may fracture and may need to be extracted.
On the other hand, if you seek treatment early, a dental filling can be placed to restore the decaying tooth. Your dentist will be able to recommend the suggested treatment for your bad tooth.
How do i know if my dental filling has fallen out?
Feel a small hard object in your mouth after biting into something hard.
Feel a crack or hole when you run your tongue over the tooth.
You may find food stuck in or around the tooth.
You experience discomfort, pain, or sensitivity to hot and cold foods.
