Tooth extractions in children

There’s nothing like the excitement of seeing your child lose his or her first tooth; and it helps to get most baby teeth out on their own. But sometimes, baby teeth need a little help moving things along. When teeth are severely decayed or damaged, or when baby teeth start crowding adult teeth, you may need to consider extracting your child’s teeth.

Why do children need tooth extractions?

Your dentist may recommend an extraction for your child for a variety of reasons:

Tooth is severely decayed
Tooth is damaged by injury or trauma
Baby teeth remain in place too long and crowd out adult teeth. Tooth extraction can help adult teeth come in and eliminate the need for orthodontic treatment down the road
Extraction is necessary to help orthodontic treatment: removal of a tooth can reduce crowding and allow the orthodontist to straighten neighboring teeth.

Questions & Answers

What is involved in tooth extraction in children?

Tooth extraction can cause some anxiety for both parents and children, but in most cases the procedure is simple and less complicated than tooth extraction in adults.

Your dentist will begin with an X-ray to check the tooth’s roots and bone condition. A simple extraction usually requires only a local anesthetic. The dentist then removes the tooth with forceps, moving the tooth into the socket and rotating it to separate the periodontal ligaments that attach the tooth to the jawbone.

More difficult extractions may require removal of some of the gum tissue near the tooth so that the tooth can be extracted. This type of procedure usually requires sedation through nitrous oxide or IV. Sedation dentistry is an increasingly common and safe option for children undergoing more complex dental procedures.

Saving space for adult teeth

Baby teeth are in some ways placeholders for adult teeth and help guide the permanent teeth when they come in. If a baby tooth is removed because of damage or decay before the permanent teeth come in, the dentist may recommend a prosthesis to be made sure the new tooth comes in properly. But if the permanent tooth is not far from coming in, a prosthetic tooth will not be needed.

Tooth extractions and your pediatric dentist

Pediatric dental extractions are common and generally simple. But having a pediatric dentist in charge of the procedure gives many parents peace of mind. Pediatric dentists receive additional training in oral development. They focus heavily on treating baby teeth, predicting when permanent teeth will come in, and using anesthesia to help with an extraction. Dental Experts Albania is a skilled partner in keeping your child’s mouth healthy and helping adult teeth get to the right place.

Your first visit

Many people who visit Dental Experts Albania have questions about cosmetic problems, including stained and discolored teeth. During your first visit, you will receive a full set of x-rays, a thorough examination, cleaning, and time to talk with your dentist (plan to spend about 90 minutes in our office).
We will review your exam, talk about how you would like to improve the appearance of your teeth, and discuss a treatment plan.
