Mobile skeleton prosthesis
The skeletonized prosthesis, also called skeleton, is the ideal solution for replacing missing teeth effectively, economically and quickly. The dental skeleton belongs to the type of removable partial dentures. Basically, it is the metal framework of the device itself that gives it its name, as it is a support structure, characterized by strong elasticity in adapting to the patient’s teeth. It is a non-surgical alternative solution to implantology, indicated for the rehabilitation of a partially edentulous, that is, cases in which there are still healthy teeth, which can act as a support.
What is skeletonization?
It consists of a removable medical device designed to replace, both functionally and cosmetically, missing teeth.
The skeleton is composed of three elements: the central body, the artificial teeth, and the flange.
The material of the central body is usually an alloy of chromium, cobalt and molybdenum; the supporting pillar also has hooks or attachments, to be anchored to the natural teeth, which will act as support.
The metal bar ensures the stability of the skeletonized prosthesis.

Questions & Answers
Composition of the skeleton
The dental skeleton is composed of several elements among which we find:
- Resin or ceramic teeth i.e., the replacement teeth to be made as much as possible the color of the natural ones in order to mask tooth replacement
- False gingiva or flange that is intended to hide the metal hooks and improve the aesthetics of the mouth
- Invisible metal hooks which take care of holding the skeleton firmly in place
Advantages and disadvantages of skeletonization
Certainly the very affordable price makes dental skeletonization one of the best for restoring lost teeth.
A positive element of the dental skeleton lies in the speed of fabrication: impressions of the osteomucosal structure are sufficient to shape the prosthesis.
It is an ideal alternative in those cases where implant placement is not feasible.
One drawback to it is its hygienic maintenance, like all removable prostheses.
There is also a risk of hooks becoming visible, especially if they are anchored to the anterior teeth.
However, the skeleton with aesthetic hooks is made of resins that beautifully simulate the gingival mucosa; this can be a good remedy.
How much does the dental skeleton cost?
Prices of mobile skeletal prosthesis are generally affordable.
It is always a more cost-effective alternative to a fixed solution; influencing its cost are the number of dental elements to be replaced and the amount and type of clasps to be made.
