Provisional dental prosthesis
The provisional denture is the prosthetic device used by the patient in the time span from the starting situation, whatever that may be, to the delivery of the final denture. One can have a provisional prosthesis for a single tooth (provisional capsule), for several teeth (provisional bridge) or for the entire arch (fixed or mobile provisional prostheses). Also called “the provisional” it can be a total removable prosthesis (denture) given for use by the patient who has to wait for the period of osseointegration of the dental implants.
When and why is it used?
Temporary dentures should not be thought of as something of little importance that serves only to buffer a situation in the making.
On the contrary, this type of prosthesis provides the dentist and dental technician with all the necessary parameters to be transferred and recreated on the final one in order to arrive at the best possible final result both functionally and aesthetically.

Movable temporary partial denture
Constructed from acrylic resin that serves as the gingiva onto which the teeth (or the tooth alone) to be replaced are anchored, the temporary removable partial denture is embodied in the skeleton or flexible nylon denture.
The latter does not need metal hooks to anchor to the teeth that act as an abutment and, therefore, is the most aesthetic but also the most costly solution.
Temporary partial fixed dental prosthesis
When the patient visits the dentist to replace a few missing teeth, one to 4 or 5, with a fixed solution, the choice falls on the Maryland Bridge or a partial bridge on dental implants.
The first option involves the use of a dental capsule with flaps that bond to the adjacent teeth that will have the function of support while in the second, support will be provided by osseointegrated implants.
For the sake of completeness, we should add that the Maryland Bridge solution can also be considered a provisional dental prosthesis when it is used while waiting for osseointegration to occur, that is, when the dentist prefers to use deferred-load implantology instead of proceeding with immediate-load implantology.
Temporary complete removable prosthesis (denture)
This is the classic removable denture or removable total denture.
Many dentists prefer to equip the patient with a temporary denture to check its construction parameters, make adjustments based on the new wearer’s feedback, and transfer what has been done to the final denture.
It is, in short, an interim phase that serves both the technician and the patient to get used to the new situation.
