What are dental fillings?
A dental filling is a type of restorative dentistry treatment used to repair minor tooth fractures, decay, or otherwise damaged tooth surfaces. Dental filling materials, which include composite, porcelain, and silver amalgam, can be used to even out tooth surfaces for better biting or chewing.
How is a dental filling performed?
The dentist will begin the dental filling procedure by preparing the tooth and the surrounding areas necessary to restore the damaged area. Decay or damage is removed, and the area is cleaned to remove bacteria or debris before it is “filled” with filling materials.

Questions & Answers
How long do dental fillings last?
Every filling is unique, and the lifespan of a filling depends on the following main factors:
- Diet
- Oral hygiene
- Oral health
- Materials used
- Size and position of the filling
What does the dentist use for dental fillings?
Composite fillings are mercury-free plastic materials that match the natural color of the tooth, used to replace missing parts of a tooth. Because they bond to the tooth, composite fillings restore most of the tooth’s original strength and natural appearance. In addition to offering durability and strength, many patients opt for composite fillings as they are also more aesthetically pleasing.
Porcelain fillings are tooth-colored ceramic fillings. They are more resistant to staining and abrasion and can last longer. Porcelain fillings are custom-made to fit your cavity perfectly and to match the rest of your teeth.
What happens if you do not get a dental filling?
Tooth decay can only worsen over time. If you do not seek treatment, decay can turn into a toothache and may eventually require further treatment or cause the loss of that tooth.
When decay reaches the tooth nerve, you may begin to experience extreme sensitivity and tooth pain. Eventually, a dental abscess may form, and the tooth could fracture and may need to be extracted.
On the other hand, if treatment is sought early, a dental filling can be placed to restore the decaying tooth. Your dentist will be able to advise you on the suggested treatment for your decayed tooth.
How can I tell if my dental filling has fallen out?
You feel a small hard object in your mouth after biting something hard.
You feel a crack or a hole when you run your tongue over the tooth.
You may find food stuck inside or around the tooth.
You experience discomfort, pain, or sensitivity to hot and cold foods.
