PERIODONTICS

Periodontitis

Periodontitis, a type of gum disease, is severe inflammation of the gums, with symptoms that include red, bleeding, or swollen gums. If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss. Treatment may involve special deep cleaning and, in severe cases, surgery. Regular brushing and flossing can prevent periodontitis.

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis means “inflammation around the teeth”. Being a severe form of periodontal disease (gum disease), it damages the pink tissue that holds the teeth in place.

The potential problems also extend beyond inflamed gums. If left untreated, periodontitis can destroy the bones in the mouth and lead to tooth loss. Fortunately, you can take steps to prevent this serious disease.

Questions and answers

What happens when you have periodontitis?

Periodontitis causes the gums to become very inflamed. They can turn red, swell, and bleed. The inflammation is so severe that air pockets also develop between the gums and teeth.

Bacteria enter and thrive in these pockets, leading to infection below the gumline. Your immune system then begins to fight the infection. It eventually breaks down the tissue and bone that hold the teeth in place. This response can lead to tooth loss.

How common is periodontitis?

Periodontitis affects more than 47% of adults over the age of 30. That number rises to around 70% for adults aged 65 and over.

How is periodontitis treated?

The gum disease treatment plan depends on the severity of the condition. Treatments range from deep cleansing to surgery. Regardless of the type of treatment you have, it is important to maintain good dental hygiene after treatment. This way you will keep your mouth healthy.
