Molar sealing
Dental sealing is a highly effective preventive procedure against tooth decay that involves applying a special resin (sealant) to the occlusal grooves of the molar teeth. The part of the tooth covered by the sealant resin becomes resistant to the bacteria responsible for cavities. The dental sealing procedure is very simple, completely painless, and quite fast, making it easily tolerable for children.
Which teeth should be sealed?
Sealing is performed on permanent molars, which are the teeth most at risk of decay for two reasons. First, they have a surface characterized by deep grooves where bacteria can easily hide. Second, permanent molars erupt around the age of 6 (they are the first permanent teeth), an age when many children enjoy sweets and candies while not yet being proficient in the correct use of a toothbrush and toothpaste. Therefore, the prevention of decay in the grooves of permanent molars can be effectively carried out through the sealing technique.

Questions & Answers
When should teeth be sealed?
Generally, molar sealing is performed in two steps. The first procedure is around age 6, or a few months after the first permanent molars have erupted. The second is around age 12, when the last molars appear.
How long does the sealing last?
The sealant resin applied to the teeth is not permanent but is subject to abrasion from chewing. On average, sealants last about 4–5 years, but they can last much longer. It is important that the sealants are periodically checked by the dentist and replaced if necessary.
How effective is it in preventing cavities?
The effectiveness of sealants in preventing decay in molar grooves is very high. According to studies, sealing prevents dental cavities in 87% of cases 3 years after application. After 4 years, 76% of sealed teeth are still healthy, and the percentage drops to 65% after 9 years.
Are sealant resins toxic?
The resin used for dental sealing is a completely non-toxic material and therefore 100% safe. Furthermore, no toxic substances are released either in the long term or at the time of application.
