Removable partial denture

The skeletal prosthesis, also known as a cast partial denture, is the ideal solution for replacing missing teeth effectively, affordably, and quickly. The dental framework belongs to the category of removable partial dentures. Essentially, it is the metal framework of the device itself that gives it its name, as it is a supporting structure characterized by strong elasticity in adapting to the patient’s dentition. It is a non-surgical alternative to implantology, indicated for the rehabilitation of partial edentulism—cases where healthy teeth still remain to serve as support.

What is a cast partial denture?

It consists of a removable medical device designed to replace missing teeth both functionally and aesthetically.

The skeletal prosthesis is composed of three elements: the central body, the artificial teeth, and the flange.

The material of the central body is usually a chrome, cobalt, and molybdenum alloy; the supporting pillar is also equipped with hooks or attachments to be anchored to the natural teeth, which will serve as support.

The metal bar ensures the stability of the skeletal prosthesis.

Questions & Answers

Composition of the skeletal prosthesis

The dental skeletal prosthesis is composed of several elements, including:

  • Resin or ceramic teeth, which are the replacement teeth made to match the color of natural ones as closely as possible to mask the tooth replacement.
  • Artificial gum or flange, which aims to hide the metal hooks and improve the aesthetics of the mouth.
  • Invisible metal hooks, which are responsible for keeping the skeletal prosthesis firmly anchored.

Advantages and disadvantages of the skeletal prosthesis

The very affordable price certainly makes the dental skeletal prosthesis one of the best options for restoring lost teeth.

A positive element of the dental skeletal prosthesis lies in the speed of production: impressions of the osteomucosal structure are sufficient to model the prosthesis.

It is an ideal alternative in cases where the placement of implants is not feasible.

One disadvantage is its hygienic maintenance, as with all removable dentures.

There is also a risk of the hooks being visible, especially if anchored to the front teeth.

However, skeletal prostheses with aesthetic hooks are made of resins that beautifully simulate the gingival mucosa; this can be an excellent solution.

How much does a dental skeletal prosthesis cost?

The prices for removable skeletal prostheses are generally affordable.

It is always a more advantageous alternative, economically speaking, compared to a fixed solution; its cost is influenced by the number of dental elements to be replaced, as well as the quantity and type of hooks to be made.
