Temporary dental prosthesis
A temporary dental prosthesis is the prosthetic device used by the patient during the period from the initial situation, whatever it may be, to the delivery of the permanent prosthesis. A temporary prosthesis can be for a single tooth (temporary crown), for several teeth (temporary bridge), or for the entire arch (fixed or removable temporary prostheses). Also known as a “temporary,” it can be a full removable prosthesis (denture) provided to the patient while waiting for the osseointegration period of dental implants.
When and why is it used?
A temporary dental prosthesis should not be thought of as something of little importance that only serves as a stopgap for a situation being finalized.
On the contrary, this type of prosthesis provides the dentist and the dental technician with all the necessary parameters to be transferred and recreated in the permanent one, in order to achieve the best possible final result from both a functional and aesthetic point of view.

Questions & Answers
Partial removable temporary prosthesis
Constructed with acrylic resin that acts as the gum on which the teeth (or a single tooth) to be replaced are anchored, the partial removable temporary prosthesis can take the form of a framework or a flexible nylon prosthesis.
The latter does not require metal clasps to anchor to the abutment teeth and is therefore the most aesthetic solution, though it also comes with higher costs.
Fixed partial temporary dental prosthesis
When a patient visits the dentist to replace a few missing dental elements, from one to 4 or 5, with a fixed solution, the choice falls on a Maryland Bridge or a partial bridge on dental implants.
The first option involves the use of a dental crown with wings that are bonded to the adjacent teeth which will serve as support, while in the second, support will be guaranteed by the osseointegrated implants.
For completeness, we should add that the Maryland Bridge solution can be considered a temporary dental prosthesis even when it is used while waiting for osseointegration to occur, or when the dentist prefers to use delayed loading implantology instead of proceeding with immediate loading.
Full removable temporary prosthesis (denture)
This is the classic removable denture or full removable prosthesis.
Many dentists prefer to provide the patient with a temporary denture to verify the construction parameters, make necessary adjustments based on the new wearer’s feedback, and transfer these findings to the permanent denture.
In short, it is a temporary phase that helps both the technician and the patient adjust to the new situation.
