Temporary dental prosthesis
A temporary dental prosthesis is the prosthetic device used by the patient during the period from the initial situation, whatever it may be, to the delivery of the final prosthesis. You can have a temporary prosthesis for a single tooth (temporary crown), for multiple teeth (temporary bridge), or for the entire arch (fixed or removable temporary prostheses). Also known as a “temporary,” it can be a full removable prosthesis (denture) provided to patients who must wait for the dental implants to osseointegrate.
How long will it take for my gums to heal after a tooth extraction?
This depends on general health, post-operative care, and the size and position of the person’s tooth.
Simple tooth extraction
If your tooth has fully erupted, the extraction wound should heal within 7–10 days. The gums usually close completely in about 3–4 weeks after the tooth extraction, and the bone will grow back in about 3 months.
Surgical extraction
If your tooth is inside the gums (it has not fully erupted or is severely broken), recovery will take a little longer. Healing will last from one to 3 weeks, and it will take about 8 weeks for the socket to close completely. Avoid brushing, flossing, or chewing near the treated area during the first few days.

Questions & Answers
How long should I wait before removing the gauze after a tooth extraction?
After the surgical procedure, apply pressure (bite down) on the gauze for about 1 to 3 hours to allow for clotting.
What can I do to help the extraction site heal faster?
Continue brushing (gently) and flossing. This is to prevent infection. You should avoid traumatizing the extraction site so as not to aggravate the wound.
Take medications as prescribed, including over-the-counter drugs like Panadol.
Get plenty of rest and limit physical activity during the recovery period. Physical activities increase blood pressure and heart rate, which in turn can induce bleeding.
What should I avoid after a tooth extraction?
- Avoid eating sticky and hard foods such as nuts, sweets or chocolate, shells, and tough meat that could end up being deposited in the extraction socket. Your neighboring teeth may still be sensitive.
- Do not drink anything hot or extremely cold for the next few days.
- Avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates and prevents blood clots from forming. This can cause a painful dry socket.
- Avoid smoking
- Avoid vigorous physical activities.
What are the common consequences of tooth removal?
- The wound may bleed for a few hours.
- You may experience fever and chills, which could indicate an infection.
- You may feel nauseous or have the urge to vomit.
- Swelling and redness may occur at the surgical site.
- The area may be painful, which can be managed with prescribed painkillers.
