PERIODONTICS
Periodontitis

Periodontitis, a type of gum disease, is a serious inflammation of the gums, with symptoms including red, bleeding, or swollen gums. If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss. Treatment may involve special deep cleaning and, in more severe cases, surgery. Regular brushing and flossing can prevent periodontitis.

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis means “inflammation around the teeth.” As a severe form of periodontal disease (gum disease), it damages the pink tissue that holds the teeth in place.

Potential problems go beyond inflamed gums. If left untreated, periodontitis can destroy the bones in the mouth and lead to tooth loss. Fortunately, you can take steps to prevent this serious disease.

Questions & Answers

What happens when you have periodontitis?

Periodontitis causes the gums to become severely inflamed. They can become red, swollen, and bleed. The inflammation is so severe that air pockets also develop between the gums and the teeth.

Bacteria enter and thrive in these pockets, leading to infection below the gum line. Your immune system then begins to fight the infection. Eventually, it breaks down the tissue and bone that hold the teeth in place. This response can lead to tooth loss.

How common is periodontitis?

Periodontitis affects more than 47% of adults over the age of 30. That number rises to approximately 70% for adults aged 65 and older.

How is periodontitis treated?

The treatment plan for gum disease depends on the severity of the condition. Treatments range from deep cleaning to surgery. Regardless of the type of treatment you receive, it is important to maintain good dental hygiene after treatment. This will keep your mouth healthy.

Your first visit

Many people who visit Dental Experts Albania have questions about aesthetic issues, including stained and discolored teeth. During your first visit, you will receive a complete set of X-rays, a thorough examination, cleaning, and time to speak with your dentist (expect to spend about 90 minutes in our office).
We will review your examination, talk about how you would like to improve the appearance of your teeth, and discuss a treatment plan.
